8 dresses you’ll wear A LOT this summer

Fashion - By Alexandra Stedman
Leather jacket: Jigsaw (old but buy similar here). Dress: And Other Stories (sold out sadly). Bag: £64.50, Aurora London. Sunglasses: £118, J Crew (I bought the red ones instore). Photograph: Christopher O’Donnell
What, the sun has slightly shown its face and I’ve gotten ahead of myself? How very British of me…
But I thought I’d get in quick with the summer dress post, as it will be cloudy and grey again before long. Here are 8 High Street buys that I think are worth risking the British weather for:
1. £39, Warehouse
Have you been in Warehouse lately? I must admit, I haven’t….but the new look, under creative direction of Alasdhair Willis (responsible for Hunter’s recent revamp) with Emma Cook as design director, has got me intrigued…this is the first of, I’m sure, many gems to come.
2. £79, And Other Stories

I have a similar one in cream from And Other Stories 2 years ago, and another similar in black from Monsoon – they are without doubt two of my favourite dresses. The sleeves make them look chic whatever the weather and no need to accessorise as the lace detail does the work. Just add a classic flat black sandal (I’ve just bought these) and you’re good to go. On a side note, And Other Stories dress selection, in general, is second to none (I bought this in black yesterday and think it’s going to be a winner).

3.  £38, Asos

I bought a very similar version of this in the opposite colourway last summer and it’s great for those balmy evenings – especially on holiday (but not limited to, hopefully!).

4. £59, Cos
I love a boxy tunic style dress with flats and trainers, such a go-to easy classic for me. And Cos gets it right every time. I always go there to find summery yet work appropriate clothing.
5. £140, Whistles

Gingham. Apron style. It wouldn’t usually be my thing but I just love it.
6. £39.99, Zara
I have a classic white shirt dress from Cos and it is so useful – it fits that minimal easy dressing we are all so fond of – great for city living or a beach holiday. I’d wear with black accessories for a perfect Aussie instagram style monochrome look.
7. £325, LK Bennett
On the higher end of the budget, this dress is ideal for those summer soiree occasions (dare I say ‘weddings’). I’m really into these granny style dresses (in a good way), and friend Martha Ward looks fabulous in them always if you needed any style inspo.
8. £85, Pampelone

And lastly, perhaps not as versatile as the others…but if you’re looking for the perfect holiday, beachy dresses and tops then Pampelone is your site. I have this ‘Bardot’ dress and it makes me feel so summery, I can’t wait to bring it out again this year.

I agree that Cos is second to none for summer workwear. I just bought this shirt dress and I love it: http://www.cosstores.com/gb/Women/Dresses/Grosgrain_detail_shirt_dress/46881-41837630.1#c-24481 I will be wearing it to work with tan wedge sandals from & Other Stories but it also looks great with white trainers. Thanks for your excellent blog by the way!

Hi Alex, love the stripey nautical asos dress and remember yours from last year. I just wondered what type of bra you'd recommend for it? I get so fed up with 'hoiking' strapless bras up! 🙂 thanks, Lexy x

So controversially, I'm not sure I wore a bra with it?! I've given up feeling uncomfortable and the 'hoiking'! But if I do wear one I have started wearing basically a boob tube, you can buy from Primark or M&S and much easier to wear and stay in one place! They flatten you a bit but I'm already flat chested so it doesn't matter too much http://www.marksandspencer.com/2-pack-non-padded-strapless-santoni-bandeau-bra/p/p22448280?prevPage=plp

Hi Alex, great post! I bought a great olive green lace dress from H&M yesterday, 25% off if you sign up for their newsletter so it was a snip at £30 including delivery! I tried it on in store first and couldn't believe the fit, it looks a lot more expensive than it is. They have a similar off the shoulder one in olive green to your first warehouse dress. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a style that suits me but I really like them! Holly

I've been shopping more and more at H&M online lately….they have some great gems I never see online! And loving a bit of khaki and olive this summer too – looks great with black and gold x

I bought the Asos dress!! … But if you have boobs it does NOT play nice at all 🙁 sadly had to be returned! I've tried a few things from there recently and not had much luck – it seems like they've changed their cut to be much less accommodating up top? I found a GREAT maxi at Superdry (of all places!) though so summer dressing isn't totally doomed!
