The NEW Classics

Fashion - By Alexandra Stedman
Do you remember when we all used to say ‘Invest In The Classics’?!

Well I think its changed. I now think that if we are going to spend our hard-earned money on something over £100, you want it to have that ‘Wow-Factor’.

You can go to M&S for a great cashmere jumper, or Topshop for the Baxter classic skinny jean…what you can’t get on the High Street? What designers do best: those statement final touches that make your outfit pop.

£525 (gulp), Charlotte Olympia at Matches – would love the cream ones for my wedding!
Leather zip pouch, £125, Pierre Hardy at Matches
Red glitter sunglasses, £225, Miu Miu at Net A Porter
Leather tote, £567, Sophie Hulme at My-Wardrobe
‘Pigalle’ heels, £375, Christian Louboutin
Necklace, £187, Shourouk at Monnier Freres

My favourite bright outfit updaters, which at the time I was a bit unsure:

Bag, Theyskens’ Theory                                Jacket, H+M

Classics on the High Street

Embossed sweatshirt, £65, Whistles

A classic sweatshirt should be in everyone’s wardrobe now, American Apparel do good ones too. Skinny leather trousers are now a wardrobe staple, too.

Classic cotton breton, £50, Petit Bateau at Atterley Road
White cotton shirt, £79, Reiss

I couldn’t survive without my huge classic shirt collection! Gap do good ones, too.

Cashmere jumper, £39.90 in the sale, Uniqlo

Uniqlo’s cashmere is amongst the best and it hangs so nicely. I can’t believe what a bargain this jumper is in the sale!

Oh Alex….. *sigh* Oh how I want everything from this list! I used to always believe that my staple and classic items were a good black jean, a classic white shirt, a black patent court shoe, but alongside these I cant help but add to these 'classic' and look for a out-there statement necklace that is big and bold, a neon shoe (like those amazing Pigalle heels SWOON)a breton tee, a tan loafer, a stand-out mans watch the list is endless! I love this take on the new classics now give me those Charlotte Olympia slippers NOW!

haha, we were discussing this in the office yesterday and I think Red might be doing a feature on this! A bright statement shoe is a must – and wear it with your already firm classics – skinny black jeans and white shirt!

I NEED the Pierre Hardy pouch. Like, I actually might expire if I don't get it. I rarely get this worked up about bags rather than shoes! And you know I love your yellow blazer too! x

I completely agree, the right accessories can really lift a bland outfit!

I used to work with a woman who had the most amazing designer wardrobe. She used to say this all the time to me – don't buy the classic colour, buy the bright one and make it a statement.

You are so right – we can buy such great staples on the high street, so investment pieces should really have "wow" factor.

I hate it when other people get it so right….I'm still so hit and miss!

Thank you! This is probably my ultimate favourite jacket – it looks so great with a plain tee, really lifts it
