Velvet Goldmine…

Fashion - By Alexandra Stedman
Images from Pinterest

Recently, with my interiors browsing even more heightened, I’ve been drawn to velvets. Not velvet in your typical, Laurence Llewellyn Bowen kind of way, with black chandeliers in a country mansion, but real-life velvet thrown in a more city-living kind of way. My husband is not convinced…so this post is really for him (or me).

Velvet tub chair, £445, Oliver Bonas

Velvet Ottoman, £395, Oliver Bonas (have always wanted one of these for the end of the bed)

I’ve even looked at Velvet beds:

The ‘Chrome’ bed from Loaf in ‘Slate Clever Velvet’, £795

I was on a mission and nothing was going to get in my way of my chic Scandi/marble/velvet strewn loft. And then we were told our roof needs replacing, and that has pretty much swallowed the entirety of our decorating budget. Sigh.

Instead? I’m opting for velvet details: cushions, mainly – and then copper highlights.

Where else? H&M Home

I let the Loaf bed go and instead, discovered Habitat’s beds are really reasonable (I don’t know why I never thought to look at them before for beds) – and for £400 less, the ‘Fredd’, for all intents and purposes, is pretty much doing the same job (and this way, I get to buy the sofa, too).

‘Fredd’ double bed, £395, Habitat
‘Momo’ 2 seater sofa, £375, Habitat

So, get yourself down to H&M Home, buy yourself some cushions covers for £6.99 (but buy the padding, too, as they trick you with the price. I am never, ever in the market for a limp cushion cover with no padding).

All 3 cushion covers, £6.99 each, H&M Home
Cushion (including padding), £8, BHS

Cushion (including padding), £8, BHS

That's such a shame about the roof Alex!

This post made me chuckle because I've brought home those velvet cushions from HM home and my partner loathes them. He does not get them at all – only ones he likes are French Connection home ones ( which are good but ££ ).

    xx

How funny. I think my husband thinks I'm being 'la di da' with fancy fabrics! So funny!

I love velvet cushions but my weakness is silk velvet or velvet which has a viscose mix in it as those are super soft and feel extra luxe. I like the ones from Cushions Online which although are pricier than the H&M ones, they do come with the pads and the service is good and they seem to be a smaller company. I got such a sweet email to say they were on holiday when I put in an order and they apologised but despatched within a couple of days all the same. The colours are also beautiful and no I'm not on commission 🙂 but I liked them. http://www.cushionsonline.co.uk/velvet-cushions

I'll take a look, thanks Sue. I must admit I'm often guilty of just sticking to stores I know 😉

I can't touch velvet, it makes me cringe! The feeling goes right through me. Growing up my Mum always had velvet curtains and I could never touch them! Reading that back it sounds weird ha!

Not at all! We had an intern at Red who couldn't touch velvet…so when the goth trend was in, it was very difficult!

I share your love of velvet! I must get myself down to H&M Home again. I went wild in the aisles there before Christmas. I love that place!

It's just perfect – everything is cool, fits in with my home – and is affordable!

Oh no, gutted about the roof.
First job when I returned from holiday? Hanging dark grey velvet curtains in my bedroom. They look FAB….from next. Sleep later too! Xx

Next has such good homeware – and obviously I'm a fan of dark grey! Hopefully downstairs will pay half for the roof (but so far they're being very compliant)….

Oh, I know the feeling! I had the same case of velvet love when looking for sofas – still convincing the other half but getting there! I did a blog post on my velvet sofa finds – not as good value as your Habitat find though http://thegreeneyedgirl.co.uk/2014/11/08/lusting-after-a-velvet-sofa/
