Check mate: Gingham

Fashion - By Alexandra Stedman

Trench: £90, Next. Jumper: £280, Bella Freud. Jeans: £29.99, H&M. Bag: Sezane (old). Shoes: £68, Office. Photographs: Christopher O’Donnell.

The current fashion obsession with gingham has hit fever pitch, but that doesn’t stop me from picking up everything with those little black and white checks and still thinking ‘I need this in my life’.

At one time only for small children and picnic attire, gingham has (for once) overtaken florals as the spring print of choice. And it has been picked up by the High Street in a major way, so there really is no need to go high end.

I’ve done a little round-up of items I’ve been either buying, eyeing up or lusting after  – but I warn you not to go crazy. Definitely not something to be done head to toe: try wearing with your everyday essentials: denim, chunky knits (see my gingham skirt post here) and tees. It also makes excellent beach attire: kaftans, sandals and smock tops are a winner.

And APOLOGIES in advance for making your eyes go funny…

1. Smock dress: £49, Topshop.

2. One shoulder top: £29, Warehouse.

3. Dress: £19.99, H&M.

4. Bikini bra top: £57, J Crew.

5. Bikini bottoms: £50, J Crew.

6. Shirt: £19.99, New Look.

7. Skirt: £39, Topshop.

8. Shoes: $89, Innika Choo (I bought these but be warned – I had to pay £20 customs – they’re worth it but just expect to pay something extra when they arrive!).

Love that trench, Next is so good this Spring. The good thing with the micro gingham check is that it almost comes across as grey. I look dead in black but this check is doable. So tempted with all the gingham ruffled skirts too, so pretty.

I love Next most seasons, to be honest! But this spring they’ve really outdone themselves. And good tip about the micro gingham – very true – doesn’t feel so ‘look at me’ x

YES! These are so comfy, the suede is super soft and the block heel makes them really easy to walk in (this style is also, still not going anywhere) x

The gingham skirt is sold out in my size already – may have to get the Debenhams/Preen one instead!

I love you outfit and you look so great! I really admire your style, it’s so elegant. Sometimes I find it difficult to go out so well dressed when (in the city I live in) everybody is so casual, but maybe that’s just me lol. Thank you for sharing your outfits with us.
