I am not actually great at upcycling, in the sense that I can’t chop and change items and repurpose them but I do see beauty in most things…and when I spotted this metal bench for sale on eBay I knew it had potential.

I had been searching garden benches for a while and they were really expensive but this one, from a local scrapyard, was good value – a bit bowed and rusty but I loved the shape and had a plan of what I wanted to do…
First, I removed the rust and top layers of paint with a wire brush…

I then researched metal spray paints, I had used Rustoleum before (we used the paint on our fireplace in our bedroom renovation) and the Painters Touch multipurpose spray paint in ‘Sage’ looked perfect – a Soho Farmhouse green, if you will. It’s obviously a good spray as we couldn’t find it available across London and we ended up picking one up from Folkestone (luckily we could combine the trip!).

It took about 10 minutes to spray and it was joyfully satisfying. We needed two spray cans to finish the bench and to be honest? It’ll probably need respraying every year or so but it looks great and once we added a cushion (this is from Madame Stoltz – buy similar here) it quickly became the most used seat in our garden. Not bad for a few hours work!
