Meet the Artist: Frances Costelloe

Artists - By Alexandra Stedman

Frances Costelloe is an artist and brand consultant based in London and launched her own brand in 2017, designing hand painted lampshades (stocked in Liberty) and unique line drawings (available on Partnership Editions). We have always admired her work and when we saw her ‘shell’ drawing knew it would make the most beautiful matchbox. Luckily, she was as excited about it as we were…

How did you get into your current career?

Slightly by accident. I started painting lampshades for myself when my first child was 6 months. I’d always painted but never sold my work. I put up a photo of one of my faces lampshades on Instagram and instantly people asked if they could get one. The next day I started an online shop and used it to build a mini business. I enjoy working part time on my brand and also as a consultant for others.

Have you always lived in London?

Yes, born and bred. Most of my mum’s family haven’t moved much further than two miles from where they grew up. I’m in Tottenham now which I love as there is a great community.

What inspires you?

Exhibitions inspire me mostly. I love Van Gogh and have visited his museum in Amsterdam about 5 times. I was always amazed he didn’t start being an artist until 27 which encouraged me that I didn’t need to start until I felt ready.

Do you also have a love for matchboxes?

I do love matchboxes especially as part of an evening ritual of lighting candles. I love the way the Scandinavians burn candles on short winter days to brighten up a dark room.

Dream dinner guests?

Someone to cook the dinner first – I choose Georgio Locatelli. I used to go to his restaurant a lot with my grandfather so his food brings back good memories and his kid goat ragu is unparalleled. Secondly probably just my best friends. There haven’t been enough dinners recently all together.
