Weekend in Margate

Frugal City Guides - By Alexandra Stedman

You know that thing when London gets on top of you and you need some fresh air and bit of a different background for a bit? Yeah that. My husband and I have never really done a UK minibreak before, and had heard such a great things about Margate, so we booked a pre christmas trip to spend some time together.

We stayed in The Reading Rooms which had been on my list for so long…it’s £180 a night per room but you get an entire floor each (the bathroom was bigger than my flat!) and breakfast is outstanding and is brought right up to your room.
Be warned, Margate is rather quiet this time of year. We stayed Sunday to Monday and a lot of places were closed. But we did the Turner Contemporary on the Sunday and Dreamland on Monday – which was on our list. As well as open fish and chips on the beach and Hantverk and Found for gin and tonics.
I loved everything in the Haeckels store – a laboratory of amazing beauty products, all made from seaweed. They were usually closed on a Monday but we caught the owner opening up for the first time and had a lovely chat. They now offer facials and treatments, too.
