9 A/W trends to try now

Fashion - By Alexandra Stedman
Blouse: £28, Next. Denim skirt: £36, Urban Outfitters. Belt: £8, Asos. Suede chain strap bag: £99, Marks & Spencer. Trainers: £50, Converse at Very Exclusive. Photograph: Christopher O’Donnell

Are you finding this transition into A/W as hard as me? Especially with this hot spell, it’s impossible to really commit. So I’ve compiled an edit of the things I’ve been eyeing up which can work seamlessly with pieces you already have…

1. VICTORIANA BLOUSE

Blouse: £28, Next. Denim skirt: £36, Urban Outfitters. Belt: £8, Asos. Suede chain strap bag: £99, Marks & Spencer.
I love this blouse from Next (which also comes in pale blue) but equally, Gap have a great one, too (and La Redoute do a fab lace version, very similar to my Ba&sh top here). Wear with denim shorts and jeans now but it would also work well with tailored trousers to work or with a metallic pleated skirt and trainers.
2. ANKLE BOOTS (that you can walk in)
Hooray! Boots you can wear all day long. And I snapped these up a couple of weeks ago. Wear with ankle grazing frayed hem jeans or with a denim skirt and band tee. And stomp away to your heart’s content.
Leather boots: £82, Topshop

3. SOMETHING VELVET

It’s all about the velvet suit on the runway but in real life? I’m opting for this velvet midi skirt from M&S.

Coat: £69, Marks & Spencer. Stripe top: £14.90, Uniqlo. Skirt: £29.50, Marks & Spencer.  Suede chain strap bag: £99, Marks & Spencer. Trainers: £29.50, Marks & Spencer
4. ANYTHING LEOPARD PRINT

You all know I’m a sucker for it anyway, but it goes with everything and is huge for this season. Try print clashing with florals (see my latest post on my leopard print obsession here and follow my latest leopard Pinterest board here).

Shirt: L’Agence (old). Clutch: Clare V (available from Net A Porter here). Jeans: £30, Asos. Jewellery: Cadenzza. Sunglasses: £28 in the sale, Le Specs at Very Exclusive. Nails in ‘Wardrobe’: £5, Topshop.
Leather bag: £42, Topshop

5. METAL HARDWARE BAGS

These are more investment pieces rather than cheap fixes. I’ve been using this M&S one (which also comes in navy) pretty much everyday and it fits everything. Look for leather and suede mixed with chain straps and especially top handle bags in jewelled colours.

Khaki bag: £369, Sandro.  Suede chain strap bag: £99, Marks & Spencer. Red top handle bag: £89, And Other Stories

6. REWORKED DENIM

This trend has been around for a while now and has finally filtered down to the High Street. I love Gap’s new season denim and this is definitely a trend you could DIY by shredding hems and adding patches.

Jacket: Monsoon (sold out). Tee: £12.95, Gap. Belt: £8, Asos. Jeans: £49.95, Gap. Shoes: £115, Cos. Bag: £89, And Other Stories

7. FANCY SHIRTING

Shirt: £59, Finery

So I’m kind of just sharing my shopping list with you…as this shirt is also winging its way to me soon. Another great twist on workwear, but I also love the idea of wearing it with a bright coloured midi skirt (which I am also yet to buy…).

8. MIDI LENGTH DRESS

Weirdly one of the most useful items in my wardrobe right now. It looks perfect with heels for the evening, sandals in the heat and with trainers on the weekend (stay tuned for the Dorothy Perkins fab version coming soon).

Dress: Zara (old but buy similar from here). Trainers: £70, Adidas at Asos. Backpack: Radley (old but buy new version here).

9. FABULOUS EARRINGS

There’s something about this trend that makes me cringe and thing of the scene from ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ where John Candy sells curtain rings as earrings to all the girls in the airport. BUT after New York Fashion Week, I saw so many fabulous girls rocking fab 80s earrings and I’m convinced. The key is to keep the rest of the look simple, so a white shirt and jeans would set these off perfectly.

Metal earrings: £5.99, H&M
