Shop The Sales (and how to do it sensibly)

Fashion - By Alexandra Stedman

We all know the best way to really shop the sales and save money is to avoid them. But that’s just no fun, is it?!

The reality of it is, I’m actually shopping for bathrooms and kitchens via the Christmas sales this year. But they don’t look nearly as pretty in a collage as clothing. And just because I’m not buying anything doesn’t mean I can’t look…

1. I bought a coat just like this a couple of years ago from Mango and every time I pull it out, I get excited to throw it back on. Coat reduced from £119.99 to £59.99, Mango.

2. A rose-gold bracelet is something I wear every single day, and this is one of the last pieces from the Lucy Williams collection for Missoma – so a collector’s piece, really. Bracelet reduced from £95 to £66.50, Lucy Williams x Missoma.

3. I’ve been eyeing this top up since it landed on Net A Porter – a classic with a twist. And it will work with any jeans and heels for NYE.  Tulle trimmed breton reduced from £90 to £63, J Crew at Net A Porter.

4. An everyday pair of ankle boots that look great with denim, and you can walk in? I’m sold. Boots reduced from £82 to £40, Topshop.

5. Come Spring-time, I basically live in this style of denim: comfy, on tred and they show off a lace-up flat shoe to perfection. Jeans reduced from £95 to £45, Whistles.

6. The Very Exclusive sale is, in my opinion, one of the best. Last season I picked up some Le Specs sunnies and they were one of my best sale buys yet. Sunglasses reduced from £45 to £31, Le Specs at Very Exclusive.

7. I saw this light jacket in store last week and thought it would be so useful as a spring cover-up but couldn’t justify the price tag at the time. Now it’s less than half price. Jacket reduced from £64.95 to £18.99, Gap.

8. I’m kind of gutted as I got this bag full price last week, but I’m not bitter enough to not share the bargain with you. It’s great quality and fits everything inside. Get it before it goes. Bag reduced from £99 to £59, Marks & Spencer.

And my tips?

Only buy what you saw full price (which was why this post was relatively easy for me, I literally searched what I was eyeing up last week).

Look for items you couldn’t afford before – cashmere, coats or leather bags.

Stick to items you get a lot of wear out of: jewellery, leopard and stripes are never bad investments, in my opinion.

Buy classics that you won’t hide in a cupboard and years later accept you were ‘caught up in the moment’.

Try and buy a few items that will take you through the next season: sunglasses for example, or a kaftan (I love this one from Whistles).

More classic stores (especially interiors) feature the same items year after year, so it’s worth just holding out until the sales start – i.e The White Company bed linen or Magnet kitchens.

Coat: reduced from £329 to £230 (the navy version reduced to £197), Baukjen

    Hey Alex. Happy Christmas!
I’m on the hunt for some everyday jeans. Any recommendations for something I can wear through to spring? Mainly with trainers/hightop?
    Thanks xx

Hi Katy, I am loving the vintage wash straight leg jeans from Gap – they’re really modern, no stretch – ‘proper’ jeans and slightly cropped so look great with high tops and flats (in my velvet jacket post) xxx

I love some good money saving advice. Clothing is so expensive these days and these tips will really allow you to rein those expenses in. I love that jacket too…I want to invest in something similar.

Hi Alex, we’re after a new bathroom too. Can I ask what stockists you’d recommend? In London. Thanks

Hi Alex, I have to admit I do most online as I’m always so specific with what I want! I used mainly victorian Plumbing for my last one and it was great and not too pricey, and Topps great for tiles – grey grout so good for keeping clean and not showing mould (!) xx
